The words “Identity Theft” have become a very common term today. It continues to be the most rapidly growing crime in America. In a recent survey from the Federal Trade Commission over 8.3 million American consumers were victims of identity theft annually. We can contribute some of the increase of this crime to technology as criminals become more tech-savvy and are using several schemes to obtain consumer's financial account and personal information with intent to fraud. The best consumer protection against identity theft is education. The resource section of this site provides you with several websites that specialize in consumer protection and financial management tools.
We've provided links to each of the three reporting agencies as well as a link to “www.annualcreditreport.com,” which provides consumers a free credit report from all three of the credit reporting agencies. It's always good practice to check your credit reports periodically to ensure no one is taking credit out in your name. And of course the Credit Union is your resource, please feel free to call us anytime with questions or email us at staff@calpolyfcu.org.
